Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu)

Smallmouth Bass are also members of the sunfish family. Their mouth does not extend behind the eye when closed.Their colour is generally brownish with irregular darker brown vertical stripes on thier sides. Their eyes are red.

Smallmouth bass are native to waterways in the Great Lakes watershed. In some areas the construction of canals and locks has extended their range.

Smallmouth Bass can be found in areas similar to Largemouth Bass. In lakes containing both species their habbitats often overlap. In Ontario they spawn in early summer. Their diet is varried including insects, leeches, crayfish, frogs and small fish.

Smallmouth Bass are tremendous fighters when hooked, often jumping. This makes them a favorite species with many anglers.They will hit spinners, small crankbaits "flippin jigs" and soft plasttics.
