Northern Pike (Esox Lucius)

The Northern Pike is usually greenish in colour fading into yellow to white on the belly, with lighter spots on the sides. Sometimes the fins are reddish. They have long jaws and many sharp teeth. Northern Pike can attain very large sizes over 50 inches, weighing over 50 lbs.

Northern Pike are very common throughout the northern hemisphere. They are found in a variety or habbitats from shallow weedy areas to deeper rocky areas. They are ambush predators feeding mostly on other fish and frogs, often attacking prey that can be up to 50% of their own size. They spawn in the spring.

Northern Pike will hit a wide variety of lures. Trolling with crankbaits and spoons, or casting spinners, jerkbaits, and surface baits will work.
